This three day event offers some of the best racing in the area. The event opened with a time trial on Friday, long road races through Winchester followed on Saturday, and racing concluded with challenging routes through the gorge.

Luke earned third on the Cat 3 podium in the Friday time trail. Jason rode hard for 13th and Matt obtained 8th place in the Cat 4 field.

Saturday saw Luke and Jason finishing 5th and 8th in their 52 mile road race. This race finished with a large group sprint. In the Cat 4 race, Dan reported numerous attacks and breakaways. Dan managed to pull away with a few riders but the field came back together in the final climb and he finished 12th in the sprint. Brett reported a good race until cramps took him off the pace after 40 miles. Matt stayed with Brett and they finished together.

Sunday was brutal for the Cat 3 field. Their course was over 90 miles. Luke rode well for an 8th place finish. Jason had a flat that ended his race. In the Cat 4 event, Dan attacked the big hill at Sky Bridge. This placed him near the front but a few riders managed to escape. He formed a chase group but was caught by the pack a few miles before the finish. David was riding with the pack. In the sprint, David finished 9th, Dan was 16th, and Matt was 25th.

A few of our riders participated in all three events. Luke earned 3rd overall and stood proudly on the Cat 3 podium. Jason earned 8th overall and Matt finished 12th in the the Cat 4 field.

Doug Burton dominated the cat 4/5 sprint in Indianapolis. Strong winds kept the breakaways in check. Doug took the inside line and jumped out of the final corner to earn another first place finish!

Doug also raced the Masters field. This event had more aggressive attacks and a few crashes. The McDonalds team demonstrated good teamwork at the finish and Eric Barnett earned first place. Doug finished 11th overall and 4th in his 3/4/5 field.

The weather and course were excellent. We had a cold snap that made it feel like a typical cyclocross race. The course had a nice climb to break up the field and a few obstacles that forced everyone to practice their dismounts.

The entire course could be observed from a gazebo at the top of the climb. A nice collection of juniors and women worked hard on the climb. The Red Zone team was well represented. A good mix of racers participated in the men’s field. Andrew rode very well to win his first cyclocross race. We expect to see big results from Andrew in the OVCX series. Luke rode hard to finish third and David Lane finished fourth. Matt got some good practice and plans to be back for more CX punishment.

Many thanks to Tom for planning this event. We hope to host a few more cyclocross warmup events before the OVCX series begins in September.

Sumner County Race Report

Our Brett Miller attended the Sumner County Classic Road Race in White House, TN. Given the weather on May 1st, it turned out be an exciting event. Despite delays and combined fields, all the racers were soaked by downpours and strong winds. Flooding became a concern as the race progressed. The field got divided and Brett finished behind the leaders, but everyone who finished should have been given a prize.

Main Street Velo was well represented and had a good day at this criterium in Shawnee Park.

Doug and Roy rode well in the Cat 5 race. The rain had stopped but the course was still wet. Everyone quickly looked like cyclocross racers or jockeys in the KY Derby. As they approached the finish, Doug surged to get the win! Roy finished with the field. Podium time for Main Street Velo.

The 4/5 race started well with six of us in the mix. The race started with a rider sliding on a wet corner in the first lap. No one else went down but we rode the corners cautiously. There were a few attacks but the pack finished together. Numerous flats occurred during this race. We lost Dan and Matt to flats. In a generous moment, one of our riders offered a wheel to Dean from McDonalds. Dean went on to win the race. He was followed by Chad in second, Doug in 5th, Brett in 10th, and David in 11th. We were well represented in the sprint and podium.

The roads were dry for the 3/4 race. Andrew and Luke went straight to the front. This was a good choice because a spectacular crash crash split the field. I have no idea why the rider tumbled. The five of us delayed by the crash attempted to bridge a few times but the lead group outpaced us. In fact, the lead group almost lapped the field on this short course. This allowed us to encourage each other during the race. In the first pack, Luke had nailed down 6th and Andrew earned 12th. In the chase pack, Chad pulled 2nd in the field for 15th overall. Matt got 16th, Brett got 23rd, David 24th, and Dan 25th. During this race our team was on the front, off the front, controlling the front, and sprinting at the front.

Luke and Andrew were primed for the 1/2/3 race, but heavy rain forced to promoter to cancel this final event of the day.

Winners and Strong TT Finishers!

MSV already has two Time Trials under their belts in 2010. With several more Time Trials to go and the State Championship MSV is showing they have the legs to compete.

Main Street Velo’s Matt Fegenbush, Rob Grissom and Gene Zaparanick-Brown competed in the second of the Main Street Bikes TT series. Tom Waggener and Todd heady were running the race like a well oiled machine along with Todd’s excellent staff at HeadFirstPerformance.com.

Rob Grissom finished 8th, using non-aero equipment, and shaved a minute and 20 seconds off of his time!

Gene Zaparanick-Brown takes 6th place in the 40K TT course for his first TT of the season and put in a very respectable 1:13:10, using non-aero equipment.

At the first TT in the series Main Street Velo’s Tom Waggener, David Shelton, Matt Fegenbush, David Lane, James Smith, Jason Monk, Robert Grissom and David Sac turned out for one very windy March TT. The head winds on the back of the course measured 24.5 MPH at times.

It was a 1, 2  finish for Main Street Velo in the 20K course.

Tom Waggener turned in a blistering 00:31:50:00 for first place

David Shelton turned in a 00:33:12:30 for second place
